Stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the nerves and spinal cord. This can cause a variety of symptoms, including pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and difficulty walking. Structural correction chiropractic is a type of chiropractic care that can help to relieve the symptoms of stenosis and improve spinal function.
What is Stenosis?
Stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal. The spinal canal is the space that contains the spinal cord and nerves. When the spinal canal narrows, it can put pressure on the nerves and spinal cord. This can cause a variety of symptoms, including pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and difficulty walking.
What are the Causes of Stenosis?
There are a number of factors that can cause stenosis, including:
Age: Stenosis is more common in older adults.
Degenerative Disc Disease: Degenerative disc disease is a condition that causes the discs in the spine to break down. This can lead to the formation of bone spurs, which can narrow the spinal canal.
Spondylolisthesis: Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one vertebra slips forward over another. This can also narrow the spinal canal.
Injuries: Injuries to the spine, such as a car accident or a fall, can also lead to stenosis.
What are the Symptoms of Stenosis?
The symptoms of stenosis can vary depending on the severity of the narrowing and the location of the stenosis. Some common symptoms include:
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Leg pain
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Weakness
- Difficulty walking
- Urinary incontinence
- Bowel incontinence
How is Stenosis Diagnosed?
Stenosis is usually diagnosed by a consultation, exam, and diagnostics. The doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history. They will also perform a physical exam. In some cases, the doctor may order imaging tests, such as an, X-Rays, MRI or a CT scan, to confirm the diagnosis.
How is Stenosis Treated?
The treatment for stenosis depends on the severity of the narrowing and the symptoms.
Structural Correction Chiropractic
Structural correction chiropractic is a type of chiropractic care that focuses on correcting the underlying structural problems that contribute to stenosis.
At Sunset Chiropractic & Wellness Structural Correction Chiropractic Treatment is selected and designed from a thorough consultation, health history, physical examination (orthopedic/neurological testing), digital posture analysis, weight bearing sitting x-rays using 41 measurements and 23 angles analyzing and comparing the spine to a mathematical model. In specific cases additional diagnostics could be ordered (Digital Motion X-rays/CTs/MRIs) to obtain or confirm a diagnosis.
Once a treatment plan is developed the first step to rehabilitate a weakened spine is to apply our Flexibility and Hydration Procedures. Specialized therapies that will decrease tight tissues along the spine, bring hydration and nutrients to the damaged discs, and increase spinal flexibility. Preparing the spine for the second component of the treatment.
The Alignment Procedures. This is when the doctor will shift the spine to better alignment based off of the x-ray measurements using hands, specialized instruments, and specialized tables.
After the alignment procedures we want the body to start holding these new positions naturally. This is where we will apply our Strengthening and Reeducation Procedures. This is a specialized body weighting system that will retrain the brain and strengthen the postural muscles along the spine to start holding new positions naturally.
We will combine in clinic treatment with a home rehabilitation system that’s built specifically off your individual findings and spinal imbalances.
The goal of our care is to have the patient improve symptomatically, functionally, and structurally and most importantly teach you how to take care of your spine so you’re less likely to be dependent on doctors in the future.
