Sunset Chiropractic and Wellness: Holistic approach that heals not only the pain, but the cause.
The chiropractors at Sunset Chiropractic and Wellness are aware that the body is a delicately balanced system, which often needs treatment in order to function properly. They practice an innovative, non-surgical method of treatment to achieve phenomenal results in a variety of a number of conditions of the spine and neuromusculoskeletal system.
Dr. Alfonso and Dr. Berry specialize in the treatment of patients suffering from acute to chronic musculoskeletal diseases. Our focus if care is providing the latest advances in diagnosis and management of headaches, disc damage, back ,neck pain and extremity pain, numbness and weakness as well as sports injuries.
What are the most common types of sport trauma?
–It depends on the type of sport, but they generally include neck and back pain, disc injuries, problems in the extremities like shoulders, arms, hands, knees, hips, feet. Some are related to a particular sport, like the tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, and are caused by doing the same motion over and over again. Working out at the gym can lead to strains and sprains, if the exercise is not performed properly, and could provoke pre-existing, but undetected health conditions. Runners commonly suffer from back and neck pain, and traumas on the knees, ankles, feet, including achilles problems.
What could we do to avoid these?
Posture is a clear sign for having an abnormal spinal alignment and having an abnormal spine results in unnatural stress on the body’s structures, which eventually will break down. The body is a synergistic system. Abnormal structure or dysfunction in one area of the body will affect other areas negatively.
What effect all these changes have on the body, besides pain?
Physically, abnormal spinal structure and posture can cause many types of symptoms (pain, numbness, tingling, weakness) and problems like breathing, which may result in damage to the heart and other organs.
Mentally, pain affects different people differently. It can lead to depression due to the worsened quality of life. In athletes, injuries and pain can hold them back. If you want to lose weight, pain can stop you from exercising. Every day in the clinic we consult with new patients complaining that they are unable to play with their grandchildren or to hold their babies as a result of their spinal conditions. Pain can also put a lot of strain on the marriage, because it can stop you from being intimate with your partner, and because it makes you unhappy, thus creating tension in the relationship.
How can chiropractic help?
At Sunset Chiropractic & Wellness we practice structural correction chiropractic. It doesn’t focus on the symptoms, like pain, but on the underlying cause.
The nervous system controls and coordinates every cell, tissue and organ in the body, and the spinal cord is surrounded and protected by 24 movable bones called vertebrae. Nerve spinals travel back and forth from the brain and the body through the spinal cord and peripheral nerves that exit between the vertebrates. There is a normal shape and biomechanics in the spine, and when the system is in an abnormal position, the signals cannot travel effectively, causing malfunction in the different structures, resulting in pain and disease.
Our role as chiropractors is to first check the alignment of the spine and to develop a plan of action to improve the alignment of the structure. In structural correction chiropractic we look at the patie
nt in three ways. First are the symptoms, like pain and problems like shortness of breath and digestive issues. Second, we perform an orthopaedic and neurological analysis of the nervous and musculoskeletal system. This is the functional assessment. And third, is a structural assessment of posture and x-rays. As structural chiropractors, we want to see the patient improving symptomatically, functionally and structurally.
What methods do you use?
The usual way of thinking is that when you treat pain with drugs and the pain goes away, everything is fine. But we look deeper. Pain is caused by inflammation, and inflammation is the result of structural and functional problems. Pain is your body signalling you that there is something very wrong. Relieving the pain doesn’t mean its cause has been removed. We look for the ultimate cause and develop an individualized rehabilitation program.
The new patient process begins with a consultation to discuss the history of the condition. If the patient is a good candidate a physical examination, specialized X-rays, and digital posture analysis are performed. A team of doctors then review the clinical findings and determine a proper course of treatment. We analyze the spine using measurements comparing the spine to a mathematical spinal model. After we identify the abnormal alignments resulting in spinal damage, we develop a rehabilitation programme for each structure of the spinal system. The first component of the treatment procedure is the Flexibility and Disc Hydration procedures. We use a number of specialized therapies designed to decrease tight tissues, rehabilitate damaged discs, and increase flexibility.
Once the spine is more flexible it is prepared for the alignment procedure. The doctor shifts the spine to a better alignment, using the specialist’s hands, special instruments, specialised tables, based on 41 measurements and 23 angles comparing the patient’s spine to a mathematical model.
The body then has to learn to hold the new positions naturally. And this is where we apply the strengthening and reeducation procedures that retrain the brain and strengthen the posture muscles along the spine. All of these procedures are custom-designed for the patient’s individual spinal dysfunctions.
We combine in clinic treatment with an
individualized home rehabilitation programme that speeds up the results and teaches the patients to properly take care of their spine.
Do you have special treatments for athletes?
One example is a unique method for treatment of an often neglected problem, concerning damaged fascia, the tissue beneath the skin that encloses the whole body. The fascia can get scarred, damaged or stretched, and our way of healing it is a non-invasive manual therapy with an instrument of a special metal called Graston Technique. It is maneuvered over the affected area and stimulates the body to produce a natural inflammatory response and heal the damaged tissue. This helps with the fascia and ligaments, and is effective for treatment of tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome, and injuries of the ankle, the knee, the elbow, the shoulder.
If you have been experiencing spinal symptoms such as neck pain, back pain, headaches, migraines, mid back pain, rib pain, carpal tunnel, sciatica, disc herniations or protrusions, neuropathy, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, pain/numbness/weakness in your arms, hands, legs or feet……..
