We take open mouth x-rays to visualize and measure alignment between the skull (CO), 1st vertebrae called atlas (C1), and the second vertebrae called axis (C2).
This special x-ray view allows us to analyze and locate spinal damage and dysfunction not seen on MRI and standard cervical x-ray series
This upper cervical spinal damage and dysfunction is a common case of headaches, dizziness, and neck pain.
The alignment of the skull, C1, and C2 affects the entire spine because gravity distribution begins here and then is transferred down throughout the spine.
Analyzing Upper Cervical Ligament Instability………
The top 30% of the cervical spine has no spinal discs. It contains only small ligaments connecting the bones together providing the stability to the upper 30% of the cervical spine. The 2 major upper cervical ligaments that are often damaged in traumas such as car accidents, sports collisions, and falls.
- 50% of cervical spine flexion and extension range of motion occurs between skull (CO) and atlas (C1).
- 50% of cervical spine rotation range of motion occurs between atlas C1 and axis C2.
This is why it is so important to analyze this region of the spine for a proper diagnosis and to develop an effective structural correction chiropractic treatment rehabilitation plan.
